Workman Design is a small residential design studio based in Virginia.
For the last thirty-five years, we have specialized in designing custom homes and additions for families as well as designing speculative homes for homebuilders.
We also have experience as homebuilders and provide Construction Management and Owner Representation services, independent of whether or not we prepared your plans.
Our design philosophy centers on meeting our client’s needs and refining their ideas into practical, workable designs.
ABOUT ME: I graduated with a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Colorado (Boulder) in 1974 – worked as a framing carpenter in North Dakota for a year – moved to Houston and worked as a free-lance designer/draftsman/bank inspector for a couple of years – went out of business in 1980 and moved to Virginia, where I worked as a Project/Construction Manager for a large commercial contractor/developer (Turner Construction) and as a Project/Contracts Manager for a regional production builder (Capital Homes/Beazer).
I went back into business for myself as a residential designer in 1988. The first fifteen years of that business focused on designing spec houses for large production builders – the last twenty or so years, I have specialized in custom homes and site-specific infill projects for small homebuilders. During the recession, I worked as an ‘Owner’s Rep’ on some remodeling projects.
I am currently ‘semi-retired’, living in a little house on a lake, and trying to focus on interesting and fun projects.
In addition, I am in the early stages of producing a tutorial blog site on ‘How to Design and Build Your Own Custom Home‘, other Blogs topics about ‘Being Your Own General Contractor’ and infill development as a ‘side-hustle’, a ‘stock plans for sale’ site.
